We’re no longer on the coast, but inland off the 5 now, staying in Roseburg, Oregon. We enjoyed the town of Seaside, which is one of the nicest towns we have seen here. It was a little unsettling though, with reminders everywhere that a tsunami could come and we’d be in real danger!
Yesterday we visited Astoria, the oldest city west of the Rockies. There are many interesting things to see in this northern Oregon coast town, but we only had about an hour there. We visited the famous Astoria Column, which gives a panoramic view of the ocean, rivers, and mountains. The spiral staircase of 164 steps that leads to an observation deck was closed for repair (oh darn), but since it was overcast when we were there, we probably didn’t miss much, except for some huffing and puffing. We tried to see the home of the “Goonies”, filmed right there in Astoria, but couldn’t find it!
We went from Astoria to visit our friends Tom and Sue Carroll and see their new home in Ridgefield, Washington. We had visited them on Orcas Island on our big trip two years ago. They have since moved off the island, and are enjoying their new home. Ridgefield has the feel of being out in the country, with many beautiful new homes. We were treated to a nice lunch, and reminded once again of Sue’s gift of hospitality.
Today is just a day of relaxing, anticipating the next two days of driving.
